There is a massive amount of evidence that suggests that low serotonin levels are a common consequence of modern living. The lifestyle and dietary practices of many people living in this stress-filled era results in lowered levels of serotonin within the brain. As a result, many people are overweight, crave sugar and other carbohydrates, experience bouts of depression, get frequent headaches, and have vague muscle aches and pain. All of these maladies are correctable by raising brain serotonin levels. The primary therapeutic applications for 5-HTP are low serotonin states as listed in Table 1. Mechanism Safety5-HTP is safe. The safety concern related to 5-HTP supplements is the remote possibility for contamination with a compound linked to a disorder known as eosinophilic myalgia syndrome (EMS). In 1989, an outbreak of EMS (which results in muscle pain and weakness, vomiting, headache and in rare cases, death) was linked to contaminated tryptophan supplements (not to the tryptophan per se, but to a contaminant in the tryptophan supplements). As a result, the FDA banned the sale of all tryptophan supplements (a move that has been widely criticized by people on both sides of the supplement debate). In some rare cases, 5-HTP supplements have been linked (anecdotally) to gastrointestinal distress, muscle pain, lethargy and headaches. . Uses:5-HTP is sold over-the-counter in the United States and Canada as a dietary supplement for use as an antidepressant, appetite suppressant, and sleep aid. 5-HTP has been studied and shown to be of benefit in the following conditions: Primary fibromyalgia syndrome, Friedreich’s ataxia, depression, anxiety, binge eating associated with obesity, and insomnia. Main Function:1. 5-HTP is helpful in treating a wide variety of conditions related to low serotonin levels, including the following:2. Improving in mood, anxiety, insomnia, and physical symptoms3. Reducing depressing and fibromyalgia4. Being effective in various types of headaches including tension headache and migraines5. Decreasing food intake and weight loss |
