LANXESS Liyang production site to achieve 50% renewable electricity
Latest News: The Lanxess Liyang Production Base, a subsidiary of the specialty chemicals company Lanxess, has recently completed the first batch of green power (green power) procurement projects, and the proportion of renewable energy used reaches about 50% of the total annual power consumption , became the first production base of LANXESS Greater China to use green energy. By building a new power system based on green energy, LANXESS is accelerating the low-carbon transformation of production links, thereby helping to achieve carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals.
“With the global consensus on low-carbon transformation, the ‘dual-carbon’ goal is also under the combined force of policy guidance and market-driven, from conceptual planning to comprehensive practice. At present, energy consumption is the core of carbon reduction. We are green and low-carbon The new power system will provide strong support for the plant’s carbon reduction. The Liyang production base will continue to seek opportunities in renewable energy, and is committed to doing its part to achieve the company’s climate neutrality goal and China’s ‘double carbon’ goal ” said Chen Biao, General Manager of LANXESS Liyang Production Base.
Promote the ‘two-carbon’ goal
Green electricity refers to zero or close to zero carbon dioxide emissions in the process of producing electricity, and its main sources are solar energy, wind power, biomass energy, and geothermal energy. In June this year, seven departments including the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, the National Development and Reform Commission, and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the “Implementation Plan for Synergistic Efficiency of Pollution Reduction and Carbon Reduction”, which proposed to promote green and low-carbon transformation of energy and implement renewable energy alternative actions. , vigorously develop wind energy, solar energy, biomass energy, ocean energy, geothermal energy, etc.
Driven by the policy, a new power system with green energy as the main body is being formed, the proportion of the supply side has increased significantly, and the energy consumption of the demand side has also increased rapidly, laying a solid foundation for enterprises to reduce carbon emissions. In the green power procurement of Liyang production base, solar power and wind power each account for 50%. At present, wind power has been put into use from March to July this year, and solar power will be completed from August to December this year. According to estimates, this green power transaction will reduce several thousand tons of carbon dioxide emissions from the Liyang production base.
In addition, promoting the energy transformation under the background of “dual carbon” is a systematic project, and efforts should be made from both sides of supply and demand to make green power consumption more transparent and precise, in order to explore more practical carbon reduction solutions. After the green power transaction, the Liyang production base is expected to obtain a “green power certificate” issued by the National Renewable Energy Information Center and a “green power consumption certificate” issued by the Beijing Electric Power Trading Center by the end of 2022. The “Double Certificate” of green power is the only certificate for power users to consume green power, providing power users with data verification services for each kWh of green power transactions, sales, production, consumption, settlement and other links, so as to realize the whole life of green power consumption. Cycle traceability.
Accelerate towards climate neutrality
As a chemical company, LANXESS has always placed sustainable development and climate protection at the core of its strategy and integrated it into all aspects of its production operations. For direct emissions from production (Scope 1) and emissions from purchased energy (Scope 2), LANXESS announced in 2019 that it had set a goal of becoming climate neutral by 2040.
In order to achieve this goal, LANXESS has formulated a clear emission reduction strategy: launching large-scale climate protection projects, disconnecting emissions from growth, and strengthening process and technological innovation. In addition, LANXESS has implemented numerous measures, including green energy procurement, and cooperated with local communities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from global production sites and address the challenges of climate change. From 2018 to 2021, LANXESS’ CO2 equivalent emissions will be reduced from about 3.177 million tons initially to about 2.591 million tons, an annual decrease of 7%. Despite increased production and acquisitions, little additional emissions were generated.
From the perspective of carbon reduction, carbon emissions exist not only in the manufacturing process, but also in the entire industrial chain. Therefore, LANXESS further set its scope 3 emission target in August 2022, and plans to achieve zero indirect emissions from upstream and downstream value chains by 2050, and launch the “Net Zero Value Chain Plan”. This strategy to achieve climate neutrality in the entire value chain includes three pillars of sustainable raw materials, green logistics, and climate neutral products, and joins forces with upstream suppliers and downstream customers to create carbon reduction capabilities throughout the life cycle.
From green energy procurement to linked value chain carbon reduction, LANXESS is exerting significant sustainable business benefits, promoting green and low-carbon transformation of production links and upstream and downstream supply chains, and accelerating the achievement of climate neutrality goals. With its outstanding performance in sustainability, LANXESS ranks first in the “Chemicals” category of the Dow Jones Sustainability Europe Index released in 2021, with a score of 87 out of 100, ranking second in the global index.
