Perstorp’s sustainable methanol project to receive EU funding

Air has been selected as one of 17 large-scale green technology projects to receive more than 1.8 billion euros in funding. Project
Air, a partnership between Perstorp, Fortum and Uniper, has applied for EUR 97 million, with a total investment expected to exceed EUR 230 million. The goal is to start mass production by 2026.
Project
Air has changed the game for the chemical industry, moving from fossil feedstocks to recycled and bio-based feedstocks, enabling sustainable chemical products to enter a vast array of industries and end products. At full production, it would reduce global CO2 emissions by nearly half a million tonnes at today’s levels, equivalent to 1% of Sweden’s current emissions.

“The chemical industry needs carbon, but it has to be non-fossil carbon, and it has to be put into the circulation so we can get rid of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere,” said Perstorp President and CEO Jan Secher.
Project
Air is an innovative use of existing technologies in large-scale industrial applications. To produce sustainable methanol, the facility utilizes significant amounts of carbon dioxide and other residues recovered from Perstorp’s ongoing operations, as well as biogas from a new purpose-built plant and hydrogen from a new large-scale electrolysis plant.
Project Air will be built at Perstow’s existing facility in Stenungsund to strengthen the regional chemical industry cluster Hallbar Kemi 2030. Project
The sustainable methanol produced by Air will be used to produce chemical products, which are in turn used in a variety of applications across multiple industries and businesses. It will ultimately make thousands of end products more sustainable, from phone screens and paint to the fabrics in our clothes. Project
Air recycles carbon atoms that would otherwise remain in Earth’s atmosphere.

The consortium behind Air has now entered the preparation process for the grant agreement, which will be completed in the fourth quarter. The design of the project and the planning of the facilities are being carried out simultaneously.
