U-CAT SA 506 is a thermal latent alkali generator. It is a p-toluenesulfonate of 1, 8-diazabicyclic [5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU). DBU is a strong base commonly used in organic chemistry. However, it is not very stable at room temperature and will break down, releasing ammonia. U-CAT SA 506 is more stable than DBU and does not release ammonia until it is heated to about 160 degrees Celsius. This makes it a safer and more convenient alternative to DBU for use in organic synthesis.
